I think it was Robert Frost. He wrote a poem with a line about good fences making good neighbors.

Yes, I looked it up. It's from his poem Mending Wall.

He is probably more famous for his poem Two Roads Diverged in a Snowy Wood with the line about "I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep."

It is often and forever for me associated with John Kennedy's early death & unfulfilled promise.

references like this usually go right past me, my knowledge of foreign poetry usually doesn't go far. :s but i am happy to learn. (stupidly we mostly got to see the translations in school, and translating poetry is an iffy business at best  )

It has always puzzled me how they can translate rhyming poetry. What are the odds that words that rhyme in English will translate to words that rhyme in German or Spanish or Japanese. It must be very tricky to keep the meaning. Especially as poetry can sink or swim on just s change in a syllable.

indeed. basically it is either a new poem (when a real poet does the translation), but then it is not the original, or it is crappy translation, then it is just a pain.

(sometimes a crappy translation can be helpful with the understanding, though, when you return to the original).

but then it gives me the chance to discover (for me) new treasures
