At the races

Races are a big part of posh life in Kolkata. The Royal Calcutta Turf Club was set up in 1847 and has been holding races since then. People of all economic capacity place bets, make money, go bankrupt and so on. This year's been a bad year. A bout of equine flu prevented races across the country and gamblers in Kolkata were in abject depression. So when on January 1st, the RCTC decided to hold 2009's first race, it was jubilation all round. For the first time in my life, I attended the races, which means you get to attend the races too.

Here we go...

We were invited by the Club's Steward to the posh part, which is on the first floor. The lift is one of those ancient clanking types.

Much anticipation as everyone waits for the races to begin.

Very impressive and indeed posh.

Did you win anything? Where are the horses anyway?

That elevator is pure romance. :chacha:

OOps, maybe I should not post here? If not please swoosh me elsewhere, Mackie.

lovely athmospheric shots. love the chairs (i can so understand your fascination), and the glasses. the hand with the watch on the balustrade. all the hands with betting books (whatever you call them :p ). lots of nice studies of people. the elevator is wonderful.
