5 years already / only five years!

i just realised that it is five years and a few weeks since i started to be on the www.

started out with more or less aimless surfing :surf: , then landed up at musings.

found a LOT of people there :manic: we had a thread there that was a whole message board in its own right (which orph course didn't amuse Jamie, the webmistress from hell).

left musings in August 2002 with a bang, and hopped on board on FOP two days or so later, when Stine opened it.

went through a lot of stages with FOP - from fanboard to mixed salad to whatever … had loads of fun, and then not so much any more :s

left FOP with a bang (do i see a pattern?) and made my own place.

so far still in the fun phase around here

when i look at it, my first joining a forum seems ages ago. i had no clue whatsoever how the thing worked, what it was that Jaimie was doing (well, she made a point of making it sound like a huge workload and a very esoteric kind of job :p ). it certainly seemed to require a huge lot of tech knowledge.

at first it took a lot of courage to say anything at all, and in English, no less … :duck:

i still remember the joyful awe when i managed to put a picture into a thread for the first time ever

started to play on photoshop to make silly pictures, emos, and the like … one of them is still around: :cp:

had a roaring time doing the first collaborative writing …

when we arrived on FOP, suddenly everything was open terrain whoa! :wow: the possibilities seemed endless … by and by the limits were defined, in particular the limits set by the group. i will never forget the frustration when Daz killed the first art forum single-handedly …

got more and more involved with the admin stuff, learned loads about it by trial and error  found out that it basically is very simple, and that you can have a brilliant forum without any tech knowledge whatsoever (the fortress is proof to that  )

the place grew, and time went by. sometimes it seems like it has been decades between logging on for the very first time, and asking to be deleted, but it was just three and a half years! crazy.

and when a lot of my dreams crashed FOPwise, and we picked up the threads here, i knew a lot more about the admin stuff, and the web as a whole, and digital photography  i also knew that for me, a small, non-fan forum was the right thing. now it still feels like we started only a few weeks ago, but already it is more than a year, and more than 53,000 posts :p looks like a small memberlist doesn't necessarily make for a slow board  but it makes for relaxed admins, that much is sure.

i still remember precisely the nervous feeling of posting for the very first time ever, and it is crazy that it was five years ago - and then i think of all the things we did since then, the people i met and kept, or met and lost, and it seems impossible that it is only five years.

:surf: crazy.

i cannot remember the day, of course  but i know that i registered with musings some time in Feb 2002, and i had started to be on the web very few weeks prior to that.

it's not that it is really necessary to know :p:smooch: it just seems at the same time much longer ago, and much more recent.

:smooch: well this is certainly a day to celebrate then! Very glad you found the net :surf:

Very

Had the same route as you Mackie, delayed some time. And without any bangs :p (I went to musings to check when I got there and I can still log in :silly2: ) I joined Musings in march 03.. before that the web was basically e-mail and search engines. I rememeber you had to be 16 to join so I lied about my age as I was 7 months short  (god, 15, feels like lifetime ago) I'm not the same person AT ALL and I honestly think discovering the www has played a huge part in that. Opened up a whole new world of fascinating people and a creativity.

not really sure - first found the web in 2000, when i started the job i'm in now, and then finally got online at home in about 2002-ish. the first venture into forum-stuff was FOP in July 2003, when Tats suggested i might be interested in the wake of LOTR...then i kinda foundered in the wake of the explosion and then came here (following a fairly clear trail, i have to say!! :smooch:) still got dial-up, blahh, but couldn't be happier with the company!

:smooch: dial-up is a pain :s when my connection went bonkers for a few days i had some kind of a taste of it.

found the web in '96, then your choice of ISPs were Prodigy, AOL and I think Compuserve. didnt join any forums until musings sometime in 2001, then to FOP and now here.

nothing to congratulate me for  it is not really any kind of achievement, but rather something that happened to me  if thre is something i am an expert in it is trial and error

when did you go online for the first time, sweetp? i think we turned up on musings about the same time, i think you were already a member when i registered.

I first really started looking around on the net after I saw LOTR....RIGHT after! :roflmao: I made the kids show & help me navigate thie new territory and within a couple of days I found and registered on Musings. It was fascinating! All this talk & info about Viggo, which was my main interest at first. And I started reading the non-Viggo threads and discovered this core of funny and slightly loopy women with mysterious names: Mackie, Orpheus, Coyo-T etc. Lots of wonderful story telling, artwork, and fast fast & witty repartee.

I remember you. Mackie, extending a friendly hand to me when I mentioned having live in Germany and Muzz contacting me about my sig line. It really made me feel like I could fet in there eventually. Then.....everything went pear-shaped after I'd only been there a month or 2 I think and I'm looking around going...Where'd everybody go?! Someone thre me a lifeline that led to FOP. Then FOP led here. I like here.

Over the years I've met lots of wonderful people, learned alot and improved my typing skills enormously. :roflmao:

And made some really good friends.

I think the Fort has such a high post count per member because it's interesting. To me it's in part like a common room that people drop in & out of and visit & share news or ask a question. There is usually alot to choose from, which is kind of amazing for our size. All of the art/writing threads are emotionally nourishing and inspiring.

But I think the heart of it and it's appeal for me is the members themselves. I don't always agree with all posts ( that would be deadly dull) but I am always stimulated to laugh, think, rethink, or occassionaly curse! :roflmao: I think it's cool that I learn something new here every day. Sometimes about a member, sometimes about the world.

When I think back, it seems both more and less than 5 years. A lot has happened in my non-board life ( as with all of us)

Whatever the journey and path to now & here, I have to believe it was it was meant. Painful & bumpy a bit at times but, hey! It's gorgeous here now! :flower:

didn't venture too far into it, mostly stuck to playing online games. remember one time I typed in a web address, unknowingly misspelled it and ended up at a porn site
